How Heat Kills Bed Bugs

Bed Bug Heat Treatment Explained

Bed bug heat treatment works by raising the temperature of an entire room, condo, or home to a level that kills every bed bug and every egg at the same time. Our heat treatments hold the space between 53°C and 65°C (127°F to 149°F) for several hours — high enough to kill bed bugs deep inside walls, furniture, and mattresses, but not high enough to damage normal household items.

Bed bug heat treatment temperature scale A vertical thermometer-style scale showing how heat treatment temperatures compare to room temperature, the lethal threshold for bedbugs, and the operating range used by Bed Bug Heat Relief. 65°C (149°F) 53°C (127°F) 50°C (122°F) 22°C (72°F) Our operating range 53°C to 65°C, held for 3 to 4 hours Heat penetrates walls, furniture, mattresses Health Canada: bedbugs die at 50°C Lethal threshold — official biology Room temperature: 22°C Bed bugs thrive at this temperature We treat 3–14°C above the lethal threshold, giving heat time to penetrate every harbourage.

Research that proves heat treatment works

A 2024 study published in the International Journal of Environmental Health Research tested over 5,400 bed bugs across 17 real Paris infestations and found that 60°C for 60 minutes killed bed bugs even when they were buried under mattress material — the kind of real-world hiding spots that defeat sprays. Health Canada’s Bedbugs: How do I get rid of them? guidance confirms the same basic biology: bedbugs die at 50°C. Our heat treatments hold the entire treated space at 53°C to 65°C for 3 to 4 hours, giving the heat enough time to penetrate every hidden bed bug harbourage in the space.

The bigger reason heat treatment matters: chemical treatments increasingly don’t work. A 2023 study in the Journal of Pest Science documented that pyrethroid resistance mutations in bed bug populations have increased significantly over the past decade — meaning the most common chemical sprays are getting less effective every year, not more. This is why most of our jobs are clients whose previous chemical treatments failed.

Heat doesn’t have this problem. It works on resistant bed bugs the same way it works on non-resistant bed bugs. No chemicals, no resistance, no repeat treatments hoping the next spray will finally work.

Our Guarantee

If bed bugs come back, we come back — at no extra cost

Most pest control companies offer 30-day warranties that require you to pay for re-treatments if bed bugs come back. Our warranty works differently — longer, free re-treatments, and Aprehend residual protection built into every heat treatment at no extra cost.

Warranty Length

90 days for condos & apartments, 6 months for homes & commercial

If live bed bugs are confirmed within your warranty window, we come back and re-treat at no charge. Six months is industry-leading — most competitors offer 30 to 90 days.

Free Re-Treatment

Free re-treatments, no questions asked

We don’t charge a return fee. We don’t ask for a partial payment. If you spot live bed bugs within your warranty window, we come back and re-treat your space free of charge.

Residual Protection Included

Aprehend residual protection at no extra cost

Every heat treatment ends with Aprehend application — included as standard, no extra charge. This gives you 90 days of residual protection so any survivors die before they multiply. Most competitors charge extra for this or don’t offer it at all.

What We Ask Of You

What we need from you to honor the warranty

  • Follow pre and post-treatment prep instructions
  • Show us a photo or video of a live bed bug (not just bites — bites can come from other sources)
  • Report bed bug sightings promptly, not at the end of your warranty window

Our reputation is everything to us. We’d rather lose a sale by telling you heat isn’t the right fix than win one and leave you with bed bugs.

Our Process

How a bed bug heat treatment actually works, step by step

Here’s exactly what happens from your first phone call to the end of your treatment day — including the temperatures we hold, the equipment we use, and what we do when most companies have packed up and left.

1

Free phone consultation, honest diagnosis, and quote

Most heat treatments start with a phone call. We ask about what you’re seeing, when it started, and what previous treatments (if any) have been tried. If you’re within 45 minutes of our base in Etobicoke and we’re not slammed, we’ll come out for a free inspection before recommending anything. If heat treatment isn’t the right fix, we’ll tell you — sometimes Aprehend or another option makes more sense. Once we’ve confirmed heat is the right path, we send you a quote with the all-in price.

2

Prep instructions tailored to your space

Heat treatment requires real prep to work. We send detailed instructions tailored to your space — removing heat-sensitive items (medications, certain electronics, aerosol cans, pets, plants), bagging clothes for laundering, and clearing access to walls, baseboards, and bed frames. We give you 2–5 days to prepare depending on your schedule and how booked we are. Done right, prep gives your treatment the best chance to be one and done.

3

Treatment day arrival and setup

On treatment day, we arrive in an unmarked vehicle — no signage, no logos. We do a final walkthrough to verify prep is complete, then bring in industrial heaters, fans, and thermal imaging sensors. We strategically position equipment to ensure heat reaches every corner of the space — including inside walls, furniture cavities, and mattress interiors.

4

Heat ramp to lethal temperature

We raise the temperature of the entire treated space to between 53°C and 65°C (127°F to 149°F). This is the lethal range proven to kill every life stage of a bed bug — eggs, nymphs, and adults. The ramp typically takes 1–2 hours depending on the size of the space and ambient conditions.

5

Hold lethal temperatures for 3 to 4 hours

Once the space reaches lethal temperature, we hold it there for a minimum of 3 hours, typically 4. This gives heat enough time to penetrate inside walls, furniture interiors, mattress cores, and every hiding spot a bed bug could be in. Most surface-level kills happen in the first 30 minutes — the longer hold time is for the bugs hidden deep in your space.

Thermal imaging confirms 61.3°C mid-treatment — within our lethal operating range.

You don’t need to book a hotel. A heat treatment is 6–10 hours on site, not a multi-day ordeal. You just need to be out of the space during the treatment window — and you return home the same day.

6

Continuous thermal imaging monitoring

Throughout the treatment, we use FLIR thermal imaging cameras to verify that every part of the treated space is reaching and holding lethal temperature. If a corner of the room is running cooler than the rest, we see it on the camera and adjust accordingly. We also move furniture and belongings during the treatment to expose hiding spots and eliminate cold pockets — heat needs to reach every surface a bed bug could hide on. No cold spots, no surviving bed bugs.

7

Aprehend residual application before we leave

Before we pack up, we apply Aprehend to bed bug travel paths throughout the space — baseboards, bed frames, furniture joints. Aprehend uses Beauveria bassiana fungal spores that kill any survivors over 4–7 days and provide 90 days of residual protection. Most competitors charge extra for this; we include it as standard on every heat treatment.

Every step above depends on the equipment doing its job. Here’s what we use, and why it matters.

What We Use

The equipment behind every heat treatment

Equipment is where most heat treatments succeed or fail. Here’s exactly what we bring to every job, and why it matters for whether your bed bugs actually die.

Industrial-grade heaters built specifically for bed bug heat treatments

We use Sleep Tight heaters and GreenTech Titan heaters — both built specifically for bed bug heat treatment, not repurposed equipment. Each unit is designed to ramp an entire space to 53–65°C and hold those temperatures for hours, exactly the conditions that kill bed bugs at every life stage.

Some companies use construction heaters or plug-in electric heaters that weren’t designed for whole-space bed bug treatment. That’s the difference between equipment that works and equipment that almost works.

FLIR thermal imaging on every job

We use FLIR thermal imaging cameras throughout every treatment to verify that every part of the space is reaching and holding lethal temperature. If one corner of a room is running cooler than the rest, we see it on the camera and adjust the equipment to fix it in real time.

Without thermal imaging, you’re trusting that the temperature reading at one spot represents the whole space. It almost never does — heat pools and gaps form naturally, and bed bugs survive in the cold pockets if no one’s checking.

High-capacity air circulation

Heat doesn’t naturally distribute evenly through a space. Without strong air circulation, hot air rises to the ceiling and pockets stay cool behind furniture, inside cabinets, in mattress cores. We use high-capacity industrial fans to circulate hot air aggressively throughout the entire space — making sure heat reaches walls, behind dressers, into closets, and through every cushion and mattress interior.

Vehicle and semi-truck capability

We can heat-treat vehicles and semi-trucks as well as homes. It’s a rare capability — most pest control companies aren’t equipped for it. If you’re a fleet operator, trucker, or business with a vehicle bed bug issue, we can help.

Now that you know what we do and what we use to do it — let’s talk about what a heat treatment costs.

Comparing Your Options

Heat treatment vs the alternatives

Heat treatment isn’t the only way to deal with bed bugs, and it isn’t always the right choice. Here’s an honest comparison of how the common options stack up — including when something other than heat actually makes more sense.

Method How it works Main drawback When it makes sense
Whole-space heat treatmentOurs Heats the entire space to 53–65°C for 3–4 hours, killing every bed bug and egg at once. Aprehend applied at the end as a residual layer. Requires day-of-treatment commitment and prep. Heat-sensitive items must be removed beforehand. Almost every infestation — especially when chemical treatments have failed or you want bed bugs gone in one visit.
Chemical sprays (pyrethroids) Surface, crack and crevice insecticide applied across the space. Most bed bug populations now resistant. Typically requires 3–5 visits. Doesn’t kill eggs reliably. Tight budget or very minor infestations only.
Electric / spot heat units Heats individual rooms or specific items using electric or portable spot heaters, not the whole space. Bed bugs in walls, floors, and adjacent rooms survive. Often sold as “heat treatment” by companies without whole-space capability. Single-item treatment (a single mattress or couch). Almost never effective for whole infestations.
Steam Surface-contact heat applied directly to mattresses, furniture, and baseboards. Doesn’t penetrate furniture interiors, walls, or mattress cores. Extremely labor-intensive for full coverage. Supplemental cleanup of specific items during prep. Never a standalone treatment.
DIY heater rental Renting industrial heaters to treat your own space. Hard to reach and hold lethal temps without training. No thermal imaging verification. Fire and insurance risks. Almost never. Heat treatment without monitoring fails more often than it succeeds.
Aprehend alone Beauveria bassiana fungal spores applied to bed bug travel paths. Kills bed bugs over 4–7 days after contact. Slower kill window. Not as effective on heavy infestations or in cluttered spaces. Light or early-stage infestations, heat-incompatible spaces, or as a prevention layer.

Freezing / Cryonite (CO₂) Liquid CO₂ freezes bed bugs on contact. Surface-only. Expensive. Niche application. Rare specialty cases. Not standard pest control.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about bed bug heat treatment

These come up on most calls. If your question isn’t here, call or text and we’ll answer it honestly — we’d rather take 10 minutes on the phone than have you book something that isn’t right for you.

Is heat treatment safe for kids and pets?

Yes — heat treatment uses no chemicals, just controlled heat. You and your pets need to be out of the space during the 6-10 hour treatment window for the heat itself, but there’s no chemical residue afterward and no waiting period before returning home. The Aprehend residual we apply at the end uses Beauveria bassiana, a naturally occurring fungus that’s lethal to bed bugs but safe for humans and pets.

Will my belongings get damaged during a heat treatment?

Normal household items handle heat treatment fine — furniture, mattresses, clothes, books, electronics rated for normal home temperatures. Heat-sensitive items (medications, certain electronics, aerosol cans, candles, plants) get removed during prep. We tell you what to remove ahead of time, and we don’t bring the heat up until prep is verified.

What do I do during my treatment day?

You leave the space for the 6-10 hour treatment window. Most clients run errands, work from a coffee shop, or visit family — anywhere outside the treated area works. We text you when treatment is winding down so you can plan your return.

What do I do after a heat treatment?

You return home the same day, normal life resumes immediately. The only ongoing ask is to let us know promptly if you spot live bed bugs — we apply Aprehend at the end of every treatment, which kills any survivors over 4-7 days, but we want to hear about sightings right away so we can re-treat under warranty if needed.

What if heat treatment doesn’t work?

If you see live bed bugs within your warranty window (90 days for condos/apartments, 6 months for homes), we come back and re-treat at no extra cost. Aprehend residual covers most edge cases, but if it doesn’t, we will. Our reputation depends on actually finishing the job — not just collecting a deposit and leaving.

Can I rent a heater and do this myself?

You can — but it almost never works. Industrial heaters are easy to misuse, and most DIY attempts either fail to reach lethal temperatures throughout the space, miss the cold pockets where bed bugs survive, or cost more than a professional treatment once the rental, equipment, and time off work are factored in. The Aprehend application also requires a licensed applicator and isn’t available over the counter.
